Box Office: Top Gun: Maverick pulled in a formidable $86 million during its second weekend, bringing its North American total to $291 million and making this Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing film ever now that it has surpassed 2005’s War of the Worlds, Variety reports. The 32 percent second-weekend box office drop-off is the second lowest ever, which Variety notes as particularly impressive, since the average drop-off for blockbusters of this ilk is around 50 percent.
Mark Rylance Almost Quit Movies: And television, for that matter, he told The New York Times in a lovely profile. He said that he was so crushed after not getting the part he auditioned for in the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man — which was then followed by a horrible experience on a movie set involving a Game Boy and a hammer — that he decided to retreat to theater acting only. That is unless someone were to specifically ask him to do a really special movie, like Steven Spielberg with Bridge of Spies, which won Rylance an Oscar for best supporting actor.
Shanghai Fest Canceled: China’s biggest film event of the year has been canceled for this year due to the country’s recent COVID-19 outbreaks, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The 25th international festival was supposed to happen in mid-June, but despite Shanghai’s two-month lockdown having just been lifted on June 1, it has been postponed until 2023.

A Scrubs Reboot Is Coming: Bill Lawrence, creator of the beloved hospital sitcom, said at an ATX Festival panel on Sunday that we can expect a Scrubs reboot in the future. “We’re gonna do it because people still care about it and we enjoy spending time with each other,” he said, according to Vulture. Scrubs originally ran from 2001 to 2010 and starred Zach Braff and Donald Faison.
Coco Jones: Opens up about playing Hilary Banks on the Bel-Air reboot and her new Def Jam single “Caliber” in an interview with New York Magazine‘s The Cut. “On a show like Bel-Air, nobody’s putting me into a box and I get to be this amazing character that is Hilary,” she said. “I get to wear these amazing outfits, and I get to represent dark skin, Black beauty.”
Jake Gyllenhaal Is A Cartoon Farmer: In Strange World, a new animated feature from Disney. This is Gyllenhaal’s second time doing animated voice-over work following Spirit Untamed. In this adorable new movie, his character, Searcher Clade, doesn’t want to follow in his father’s famous explorer footsteps — he just wants to be a farmer. But, of course, he ends up on a mission through space and time. Watch the teaser below.
