Michelle Yeoh actually quite likes the hot dog fingers scene in Everything Everywhere All At Once, thank you very much.
The Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actress opened up about what she really thinks about that hilariously silly alternate universe in a new interview with Variety.
“The hot dog scene is the most beautiful love story in that universe,” Yeoh said. “We had these hot dog fingers; this is where I believe that filmmaking is a complete collaboration on all the different levels. It’s never about one person or two people or whatever it is. It is a true collaboration.”
Yeoh plays Evelyn Wang in the R-rated action-adventure comedy from The Daniels directing duo. She lives an anxiety-ridden life above a financially-burdened laundromat she runs with her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) while struggling to mend her relationship with her daughter, Joy (Stephanie Hsu).
One moment, Evelyn is arguing with Jamie Lee Curtis’ IRS officer character, Deirdre Beaubierdre — and the next she’s split between multiple universes fighting against the interdimensional being Jobu Tupaki (Hsu). In one of those alternate universes, Evelyn and Deirdre are not enemies arguing over tax law, but instead, they’re lovers who live together. Oh, and they have hot dogs for fingers.

“When you work with someone like Jamie, we looked at one another and said, ‘Let’s go for it.’ This is the scene where we’re going at it with our hot dog fingers, and those things are like hoses,” she added. “They’re made to fit, but they’re made of silicone. The next day she came back and was covered in bruises and I asked her if she had had an accident. She had all these bruises on her thighs from just going for it.”
For Yeoh to praise the hot dog fingers scene like that is special, considering that she told Empire back in March that he had originally hoped that the Daniels would cut the hot dog universe out of the script altogether.
“I honestly thought it was a big joke,” she said. “I wanted to convince the Daniels to write it out of the film.”
Curtis felt the same.
“I think the two of us looked at each other and were like, ‘Yeah, I have no idea what the fuck this is’,” Curtis told Empire. “But clearly these guys do. And they know it so well. You just surrender.”
Still, what Curtis told Empire also echoes Yeoh’s more recent sentiment to Variety.
“There’s a part of that sequence that was as moving for me as an actor as anything I’ve ever done,” Curtis said. “At the same time, we have hot-dog fingers and I use my feet as my affection tool.”
