There are more Avengers movies in Marvel’s future; Alan Cumming and Jono McLeod talk about their new Brandon Lee documentary My Old School; Winners from the Fantasia Film Festival. All in today’s Movie News Rundown.
But First: If you haven’t watched HBO’s docuseries The Anarchists, it’s a wild ride, and one I highly recommend. It’s all about the modern anarchist movement to reject the state and live free from government control. When a community forms around an anarchy conference in Acapulco, Mexico, Bitcoin becomes king, millions of dollars are earned and lost, and, of course, there’s a murder. I spoke with director Todd Schramke about last night’s episode, and if you’ve seen it, you’ll want to read what he has to say.
Fantasia Winners: The Fantasia Film Festival gave props to several films on Sunday, including Best Feature winner Megalomaniac, that tells the story of a killer whose children live in the shadow of his crimes, and Kappei, a tale of Doomsday Warriors who go looking for loving when the world doesn’t end as planned. Read more about the winners here.
And I’m Never Going Back: To My Old School, as the Steely Dan lyric goes. That song is where director Jono McLeod got the title for his new documentary about Brandon Lee, the infamous 30-something-year-old who posed as a teenager in the mid-90s in order to redo high school at his alma mater, Glasgow’s Bearsden Academy. But Brandon Lee himself refused to go on camera for his interview — so McLeod hired fellow Scottsman Alan Cumming to lip-synch his dialogue for him, and the result is incredible. The doc also weaves in animated sequences with real-life interviews. If you’ve never heard of this story, which I hadn’t, please do yourself a favor and watch My Old School, in select theaters now. And check out my interview with McLeod and Alan Cumming here.
Box Office: Jordan Peele’s Nope scored $44 million in its opening weekend, according to Variety, putting it at the top of the box office. That’s less than Us‘s $71 million opening weekend but more than Get Out‘s $33 million, so let’s consider it a win for Peele.
Avengers: Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced at San Diego Comic-Con that two new Avengers films, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, out in May 2025, and Avengers: Secret Wars, out in November 2025, will end Phase 6, according to Variety.
What Is Phase 6?: If you’re confused about all of the different phases of the MCU, Digital Spy has a great breakdown of every single movie in each phase, from 2008’s Iron Man, which started the MCU, to Phases 5 and 6, which start rolling out next year and will wrap up in 2025 with Fantastic Four, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Harry Styles to Return as Eros: In other MCU news, our prayers have been answered. Harry Styles will indeed go on to reprise his role as Eros, A.K.A. Starfox, brother of Thanos, which he played in an Eternals post-credit scene. We know this because Kevin Feige teased it in a red carpet interview with MTV News. So yeah, after you finish getting psyched up for Don’t Worry Darling and My Policeman, start getting psyched for whenever we see Starfox again, which is still a mystery.
Black Panther 2 Teaser: We got the first teaser for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever this weekend, and it’s beautiful. Featuring Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), Shuri (Letitia Wright), Ramonda (Angela Bassett) and Okoye (Danai Gurira), it also teases the next successor to wear the Black Panther suit after Chadwick Boseman’s King T’Challa. But we’ll have to wait until November to find out all the details. Watch below:
More Marvel: Okay, there was more Marvel news this weekend from Comic-Con than you can shake a stick at, but I also wanted to mention the trailer for the new Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney At Law starring Tatiana Maslany because it looks awesome. Here it is, from the Hulk himself:
Family is family. ????????????????

RIP Bob Rafelson: The director of Five Easy Pieces and co-creator of The Monkees has died at the age of 89, according to IndieWire. Rafelson was also a frequent collaborator of Jack Nicholson, having produced Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider, which Nicholson starred in opposite Peter Fonda. Rafelson also produced Peter Bogdanovich’s The Last Picture Show.
White Noise First Look: Check out this first look still from Noah Baumbach’s White Noise starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig. I’m already obsessed with it. It’s opening the Venice Film Festival next month on Aug. 31, which is a first for Netflix, to boot, according to Variety.
